On The Campaign Trail: Musgrove Makes Stop In DeSoto County

HERNANDO - Former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove's stump speech to the courthouse crowd in DeSoto County Monday proclaimed that 2008 is shaping up as the year of the Democrat.

That's the message that Mississippi's 62nd governor pitches to people in his campaign to fill the seat of former U.S. Sen. Trent Lott. Musgrove faces former U.S. Representative and incumbent U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker for that post. Musgrove made a stop in Hernando and Southaven as part of a five-city campaign swing.

If elected in the special election that coincides with the general election nationwide, Musgrove would be sworn in shortly after the Nov. 4 general election, and have seniority over newly elected senators from other states who will be sworn in after January 1.

However, Musgrove said he doesn't want to put the cart before the horse. He knows he has his work cut out for him, especially in Republican strongholds like DeSoto County.

"This is typically a Republican area," Musgrove said. "But I believe people are frustrated about how Washington does its business."
