Ronnie Musgrove was a no-show at a Democratic Party fundraiser Thursday evening at Percy Quin State Park, but his wife and party officials were on hand to tout his record as a former governor, saying he's the ideal candidate to fill Trent Lott's former Senate seat.
Musgrove faces Republican Sen. Roger Wicker in a Nov. 4 special election to determine who will serve the four years remaining on Lott's unexpired term. Gov. Haley Barbour moved Wicker from his congressional seat to the Senate after Lott retired last year.
Musgrove was unable to catch a flight out of Washington, where he had spent Thursday at another fundraiser, his campaign said.
Melody Musgrove, in making her remarks to a crowded park pavilion, touched on her husband's record as governor.
"As governor, Ronnie Musgrove made some tough decisions," she said.
Those decisions, she said, led to balanced budgets, increased teacher pay, more jobs, reduced spending and -- in part -- Nissan's decision to build a plant in the state.
As for his social record, Musgrove has conservative leanings, Melody Musgrove said, calling her husband a "pro-life, pro-Second Amendment Mississippi Democrat."
"He is a man of great faith," she said. "But he does not believe you have to go around waving a Bible to demonstrate your faith."
The Musgroves' 25-year-old son, Michael, has served two stints in Iraq with the Marines.
"We are so proud of our veterans," she said.
